“The Spey” is half leprechaun-frolicking-in-the-rolling-hills-of-Ireland-type beat and half shredding uptempo post bop. If you’re into that kind of thing, this is the album for you. I was listening to that song while running through midtown to catch my friend’s concert, and when that second half kicked in, I felt like I was in a movie.
The saxophonist’s tone and phrasing reminds me of my friend Ethan, which is a very high compliment. Ethan has this way of playing his heart out that just makes me break out into a massive smile. On this album, that moment was 5:01 on “The Firth”. It’s just a few bars but I mean, come on.
It also reminded me a lot of Justin Kauflin, who also manages to perfectly blend simple folk ditties with the hardest bop you ever heard. Check him out!
