As an avid brutalism and fog enjoyer, my attention was caught immediately by the album cover. So, well done there.
The first track of an album is always fun, because it’s like the first 10 minutes of a movie where you’re kind of being told what the whole thing is gonna be about. Namas definitely set the vibe on “Untitled”, a moody piano-driven vamp with the dampest e-piano you ever heard. But it was specifically at 2:20 when the drummer (Victor Debois) displaced the beat so subtly that I had to get my ears checked that I knew it was gonna be a fun ride.
To be honest, I’ve listened to so much music in this genre (cracked instrumentalists with jazz background and electronic influence) that I’d be lying if I said it felt completely new. But it didn’t feel tired, either.
“Don’t Rush” is definitely the highlight- I feel like a lot of collabs between bands like this and vocalists end up sounding like a compromise, but this one really felt like both Namas and singer Keysuna popped off.
